Not at all. In fact it's more common that you'd like to think. 
Unfortunately the state of post-mortem flash recovery is still pretty 
undeveloped. There are companies around who will pull the flash chips 
off the board, read them individually and assemble an image from that, 
but you are talking the same kind of $$$ that recovering raw data from a 
submerged hard disk would require.

If you are serious, and the data is really worth a small mortgage to you 
then you could do worse than contact Kroll Ontrack.
