It *might* be just right. Time will tell.

I started simple - it's in a spreadsheet because it's better for
storing column-data than a text file! Then it grew a little more
complex, rinse, repeat.

I don't fully manage the finances. This is just an IT budget, so I can
have have some broad figures of what we have spent in what categories,
and use it to help future planning, and communicating with the people
who actually manage the finances.

Yes, there is a point where it becomes the job of a bookkeeper or
accountant, but I think that even without the depth and breadth of
knowledge they would bring, I can improve on my increasingly messy and
complicated spreadsheet. I don't even mind the notion of trying some
software that might encourage or require me to do things in a certain
way - I am especially pleased to hear terms such as GAAP.
