By KL you mean Kali Linux?
You can just straight up do a dd of the image to the usb drive, this is what I've been doing with Linux isos for years, it wipes out whatever partition table you had, no "formatting" required! Just don't mix up those drive letters or you'll turn your hard drive into a kali live iso.
