A big thank you to everyone who responded.

I sent the email from the dying server while onsite last night (was
there until 11:30pm, but went offline sometime before that and am only
ready replies now).

I actually got a call from Leon Brooks (after he read my email on PLUG)
and with his help and a brand new drive, most of the system is being
recovered. There is some more work to be done tomorrow and we were
onsite for a few hours today recovering data from the damaged
partition. I'll let you all know how it worked out and what I managed
to learn from Leon.

I'll keep these people's responses handy for next time I need help
onsite with Linux stuff and continue to grow my own knowledge by
reading the PLUG list.

Cheers everyone.
If you want, you can add weirdo@jabber.org.au to your jabber account
and talk to me, I'm free most of this arvo to try and help remotely if
you want...
I /would/ suggest dropping into the chat room, seeing as it's so
quiet, but we want to keep it from being a support room.

I can help with that. With the rotten luck of hard drive reliability I've
