On this topic (but off topic to this forum), does anyone know of any
laptop manufacturers apart from Dell who sell laptops with High def
screens for a reasonable price? For as little as $200 on the standard
price you can get the 15.4" Dell monitor capable of 1920x1200 over the
bottom model which can only do 1024x768.
Yet I look around at other manufacturers and the standard monitor seems
to be 1024x768 across the board, with a few offering 1280x1024.
I demand screen real estate. I don't mind if I need to squint to read

My last two have been the Compaq Evo N800V @ 1400x1050 and my current
Toshiba M60 @ 1680x1050. Both support their respective resolutions
properly, visibly and fully to the dimensions of the LCD panel
installed being 15.x" and 17" widescreen respectively, but will go much
higher if an external LCD is connected (something I have never bothered
to do). I refuse to go lower than 1400x1050 and although I'm not a big
fan of widescreen yet, at that resolution you actually get an extra
strip of usable space down the side of what I was used to looking at.

It all depends what kind of money you are spending on a laptop,
though. I have had to go up to $3500 minimum to $5000 maximum to get
what I want in the past. Although even most $1500 laptops now support
1280x800 (15" widescreen) in my experience. The Toshiba S2 would have
been my runner up and closer to the $3000 mark, but still with
1400x1050 like my old Evo.

I have rarely been in a situation where I am adding a couple of hundred
to get this feature or that feature. Usually by the time I specify
CPU, RAM and other features (256MB video) the model I end up with
already has the high-res screen included.

If you CALL Toshiba directly, you generally get a salesperson answering
the phone. In each case I have read out a few minimum requirements and
he has read back a short-list of models. Highly recommended as a place
to start.
