I have discovered denemo [the front-end http://denemo.sourceforge.net/ ] and lilypad [the back-end http://lilypond.org/web/ ] which seems to work at least to the basics.

thanks
Noteworthy Composer (see http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/ ) is a software package that allows you to compose music score (that is, sheet music) on your computer - essentially its like a word-processor for sheet music. It also allows you to play back the tune via a MIDI output so you can hear exactly what the tune sounds like after putting it together.
It's a great product. I would buy it, except that it runs on Windows, and I don't [run windows].
I have tried running it on WINE, however it doesn't work properly. The menus are scrambled (I have put a screenshot at http://wasp.net.au/~buddrige/noteworthy.jpg ) and the Midi output doesn't work either. Without menus that I can read, it is prohibitively difficult to attempt to configure it for my system.
I have been searching for an equivalent program for Linux - Free/OSS would be ideal, but pay-for software is fine too. Does anyone know of a linux based [or Java based] program that would replicate these features? I am particularly interested in the ability to create sheet music in word-processor fashion and play it back immediately on the computer.
thanks heaps guys,
