If I can add one suggestion: for $300 you can easily buy a decent PC with a factory XP license. e.g. ebay.   But tell them while you know a bit about hardware, you never use windows, know nothing about it and cannot do support.

Or, if you really care about them, you could get a G4 Mac, upgrade the memory, and install a used OS-X Panther. ... no thats two suggestions. ...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Project Coordinator.
