I know everyone's probably heard of it already, and sorry if it seems off topic, but on the hardware side, in collaboration with open source, I've fallen in love with the Raspberry Pi.

http://www.raspberrypi.org/

For those not in the know, it's the $25 credit card sized PC preloaded with Linux that's going to be released in November, iirc. Hope they send some out to us Linux Journal peeps. :) I'm gonna try and get the entire Commodore 64 gaming collection on there with an emulator, and put it inside an old C64!

Back onto the subject of education, the first video is well worth checking out, as they note that someone with $500 could deck out a classroom with these babies (it's also one of their intended audiences). The fact that it's still open and ugly/beautiful (not hidden inside a box) and extremely cheap will surely appeal to computing educators. The fact that it's got Linux already on it is only good for us, and it'd be easier for the classrooms just to stick with OSS Linux programming tools.

"...it was brilliant, there was three up against a thousand, and boy, did we give those three heaps!"

> From: luke.woollard@osmahi.com
> Date: Thu, 25 Aug 2011 13:12:30 +0800
> To: plug@plug.org.au
> Subject: [plug] Open Source in Education
>
> An Independent member of parliament is interested in looking at
> eEducation in W.A.
>
> If you, or anyone you know, is interested/involved in open source in
> education, and would be available to discuss the issue with the
> member, please let me know.
>
> Kind Regards
> Luke Woollard
>
> email: luke.john@osmahi.com
> _______________________________________________
> PLUG discussion list: plug@plug.org.au
> http://lists.plug.org.au/mailman/listinfo/plug
> Committee e-mail: committee@plug.org.au
> PLUG Membership: http://www.plug.org.au/membership
