That would be because of Intel's open source graphics efforts for their Intel Mesa Gallium-based Driver. The effort is awesome, world leading and really shaking things up in Nvidia camps. No idea where AMD is...<br><br>

I have a mac mini but it's using the built-in sandy-bridge graphics and was pleased that once I got a 2nd monitor things actually worked under linux! I do get some weirdness like one screen going out of res/refresh range during boot but it rights itself once X starts up. Also I don't completely like the behaviour of Unity on Ubuntu 12.04 and I don't really have any way to change things.<div>
<br></div><div>I'd say that unless you're a gamer then the built-in intel graphics are more than fine plus they get pretty reasonable support. Not going to help you Brad sorry and sometimes you don't get a choice in the matter. Clearly you're a lot more capable than other people with the same problems, but with something like graphics you really just want the thing to work...</div>
<div><br></div><div>FYI people I switched to the 3.5.3 kernel from the Ubuntu mainline kernel ppa and 3D performance for the build-in intel graphics has improved considerably. I can now play Urban Terror at full 1920x1200 @ 84fps solid, it's awesome :)</div>

I hate that the Nvidia card requires a binary blob, but it's a blob that has worked pretty well for me, for quite some time on both Linux + Windows.</div>
