Rather than play around with any more settings via friend and
suggestions, we decided it was probably best to try to find a usb
wifi card adapter that would work.<br>

I ended up going to Dick Smiths and tried their Netgear, as I was
advised by the Netgear support online service, all of them would
work.<br>

When I get there all of the Netgear boxes have no info about
compatability with Unix, Linux compability.. and so when we tried
it, of none of them worked. No wifi! Discussed things with manager
via the guy who was talking to me.. turns out they shouldn't say
that the laptops would support linux installations! But they did and
that they may send it back to manufacturers to sort if need be, but
that's about all. I decided they told me it would work on the laptop
and I would, if all else fails, be asking for a refund at the very
least!<br>

others they have are compatible. Well nothing they had including
Belkin, Netgear and D-Link support linux/unix/debian installs... I
said it is only software.. what the? Anyway they suggested I try a
place called Austin Computers nearby or Jaycars.. and see if they
can help. <br>

So coffee while I searched and found the store and phone number
for Austin Computers anyway. The guy was most helpful and knew of
Linux having used some other version of Xbuntu, couple of others I
will recognise if I see, but one began with M and another one I
can't recall... good thing was he said ... he has one he can
virtually guarantee would work, the cheapest one which is always
mostly successful. TP-link 300Mbps wireless N USB adapter Model
No. TL-WN821N 3 year warranty and $16! <br>

He had sold the last one that day, (dammit) but would get more in
a day or so. Anyway we discussed others for 5Ghz and he had some
more T-Link ones that may have worked, funnily enough with the
802.11 b/g/n coding on them... so we thought yippee! Off to their
shop and good thing was he at least knew some of the terminal
commands to use and check network info with... and I shared some
of the txt files on there in case it helped.. but no success with
the two more expensive ones.. ie 79.95 (still less than Dick
Smith's biggest one) and the middle one.. can't recall price. One
Emgas? one had realtek card but that didn't work either, nor the
two TP-Link ones... so would have to come back for the other I
thought. <br>

Next thing.. Universe is looking after me, man walks in with the
one I needed, as it didn't work for him ... but when we tried it,
it was trying to connect to their network, not so well, so he
tried it in a different part of the shop, with less wifi
interference. At least the wifi was showing in the drop down wifi
menu. I had set the configuration for my hotspot portable modem,
whilst I had been at Dick Smiths, and so when we turned that
modem on.. voila it picked it up... so what a relief and all for
$16... so see how it goes. <br>

I am home now and my own wifi picked up with no problems ... so
all is good (phew) That was quite a journey.. Hope you can relay
this to the forums. I will share the main points with the PLUG
email list.<br>

Thanks for all your help folks! It is very much appreciated. The
man at the shops it is the same card they use and keep going but
folks always want the newest one lol<br>
