You need to edit the  file in /etc/X11/XF86Config
either manully 
or easier still create a brand new one with lotts of predefined
resolutons just by typing
XF86Setup in a virtual terminal and it goes thrur a setup procedure 
then 
while running X use 
ctrl alt + 
and 
ctrl alt -
to switch between modes.
I suggest read 
man XF86Config
