In looking in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary, fairy means imaginary. If the
machine is so named, then the numbers become imaginary, and, what sane (not
SANE, for scanners) people, can comprehend imaginary numbers? Then we get into
nightmarish things like Kafka's things, and the Faeries are sometimes, somewhat
evil( though, from what I understand, some of these computers have evil little
gremlins for their CPU's).
