Anyone running imap4 listening on port 143 directly, not via inetd?

I get an annoying 'imap server has gone away' type message from the imap
client which I presume is due to the imap daemon behaviour when launched
via inetd. Will this be remedied if I can run imapd directly?

My presumption might be wrong though (I was using MS-Outlook(2000) as a
test engine)
