Hi Brad.

At the risk of this being the bleeding obvious, some of the tips for 
network performance tuning in this url might be worth considering:

Especially you might be able to tune parameters such as maxmtu to give you 
a better deal.  4.5 megabytes / second suggests that you're getting about 
1/3 the theoretical maximum bitrate and of course you're taking performance 
hits on the protocol overhead.
