They should point a pseudo terminal, like /dev/pts/0 .

Anyone know of a way to tell some terminal program to connect to
an existing pseudo-tty and shell process?

  Though I thought the dying X-term should have sent a HUP signal to all
of its process group. wget would then detach, and most programs should
exit. Right?
