LILO really annoys me, it never works right damnit

Atm on my box i built the otherday (a 486 mess around machine) it goes LI 
40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 
40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 (etc. 
etc...)

Any ideas? Ive reinstalled LILO but the same, im having to use a boot disk atm

Im using Debiab2.2r2potato

Oh and I thoroughly recommend APC Linux procketbook & sequel for newbies 
(it also gets ur RH7,Mandrake7 and Debian2.2r2 for $40 and updats plus a 
good guide including your own kernels and stuff
