A while ago I saw a machine that had been cracked (via a hole in bind)
and that was one of the symptoms.  The cracker installed a /bin/ls out
of a rootkit that was designed to hide certain files, and that /bin/ls
didn't do timezone stuff properly.
Worth looking into...
