[plug] newbie updating: i386 vs i686?

I usually install packages that are *.i386.rpm but I'm noticing that
in the RedHat 7.0 updates release from RedHat there'sa section for
glibc and kernal rpms that is for the i686.  If I update from the i386
folder for either glibc or the kernel rpms will I be doing something
terribly awful and blasphemous?
