Hi David
Have a look at gnome-apt (do a apt-get install gnome-apt before :) This is not text based so not everyone likes it. It gives you a nice graphical interface where you can see which packages are available, and which ones you have installed.
You can search for packages etc. Like regular apt-cache search or other comands
