Power-surge, or phone-line spike? I think its usually the latter.
I pulled the plug when the thunder got loud.

BTW, I'm a bit worried about the big lightning rod on the roof being
connected to the LAN via the digital TV card.  How useful are those $20 
in-line isolators on the coax ?
