As already said, Broadcom have a huge range of wireless gear. Some work with free drivers, some need proprietary drivers and some just won't work at all.
I have a couple of Macs here. Same generation, outwardly identical but slight variant of internals. One works "out of the box" with the Kernels brcmfmac driver and the other requires the proprietary wl driver.
Hugely frustrating. I've just ordered a card to replace the older one and bring it up to work with the brcmfmac driver. $26 well spent.
