I have it from one who used to write device drivers for OS/2 that ESS
stands for Extra Shitty Sound.

Normally I'd not repeat such words (having delicate ears) but it seems a
fair description of mine. It's nowhere near as pleasant to hear as my
pre-PnP SB16.

The Sb16 has been easier for me to se up too.
