Try a different network card.
I have had similar problems on core systems where after around
5 minutes of operation the damn network card would timeout
or cause packet errors, these where standard RealTek Ne2000
network cards.
Upgraded to 3com 3C903 PCI cards, cost a bit more, but worth
the upgrade, they can handle 100MB throughput without dropping
any packets.
