You're in danger of starting a semi-religious war based (as usual) on
semantics ! 

Sendmail does indeed send mail. It can send to other servers (as you
rightly said), but also to a client. To demonstrate this, take your chosen
Linux box with sendmail, and send mail to other users on the box. I
guarantee that they will be able to read said mail (assuming the absence of
config problems of course) with something like elm. 

Or were you trying to say something different?
