[plug] X - when 'alt' stops working

Is there some way to reset your X server?
Sometimes the Alt key "stops working" - not sure which app is causing it.
I cant see anything relavant under 'xset' or 'xdpyinfo'.
It might be something stripping the 8th bit??

Is there a fix better than killing X and restarting?
