Matt & John,
I read somewhere that the latest version of Samba (2.0.5a)
has the ability to detect buggy SMB Clients and modify
behaviour on the fly rather than requiring this parameter
to be set.

Actually the workaround is for 95 only, and should not be enabled with any
other version of windows, including 98. It may not be what's causing your
problems, but it's worth checking out anyway.
