Michael,
I think you'll find the spaces/characters are inserted by your CLI unit. My
$40 caller-ID jobie from Tandy asks for a 4-digit area code, and the manual
(ok, it's an A4 sheet in about 6 langauges) seems to require ours to be
entered as "0008", though it does have some weird symbol options. I really
must play with it sometime. :)
When a landline call comes in, it shows the call as:
NUMBER ONLY
0894445555
When a mobile call comes in, it shows the call as:
MOBILE
0412345678
Withheld-number calls replace the numbers with "----------"
I wonder if it's programmed to know "04" area codes are digital mobiles, or
if the CLI info sent down the line tells it? Haven't seen any international
calls come in on it yet, though.
