I think when people are talking seriously about security they don't use
"hacker" or "cracker". Having said that, hacker/cracker does slip out
occasionally even from the best intentioned person and when it does I
think it's best to use "cracker" given the alternative (and increasingly
popular!) semantics of "hacker".
Consistent with this, recently mainstream new sites seem to have begun
using "cracker" in place of "hacker" and thus it would be strange if the
Linux/Free Software/Hacker communities did the opposite.
