What will happen, is the first time after named is started up, it will
have to query the root servers for everything (but then there are root
servers all over the world, so those that are in australia will answer
first)
Then your named will cache info like what nameservers are authoritative
for the .com.au domain etc, so instead of asking the root servers again,
your named will talk to munnari.oz.au etc. direct.

You might see a slight performance hit to start with, because your ISP's
nameserver would have had a chance to build up a better cache, but for
sites you look at frequently, or really rare sites that the ISP wouldn't
have cached itself, you shouldn't see any difference in performance.
