Sorry for the winge, I thought it was bordering on topic...

Anyway,

Have you tried adding the machine you telnet from to the hosts file or from
a resolvable address? I had a similar problem with RH6 & 6.1, and the logs
only said that the server had received an invalid double-byte character.
That and I later moved to an OpenSSH / putty combination.
