David, another trick which helped me:

- make sure windows boots from hda, primary partition below 1024 cylinders

- put your "/boot" directory on the DOS partiton, e.g. /dos/boot, with
the boot map, kernel etc.

  Then the Linux kernel will load totally from the DOS partition.
This also  helps if your linux partitions go beyond the 1024 cyl bios
limit. Or if your Linux SCSI drive isn't supported by bios.

BTW, Linux can get just as confused as windows, if the BIOS settings do
not match the HDD formatting.
