If you buy an internal modem beware that a lot of them up PnP. Some can
be jumpered either PnP Enable / Disable others can't.
PnP isn't worth the agro.
Make sure that it's V.90 or easily upgradable to V.90.
Some are dual 56Flex / V.90 or X2? / V.90 which is handy if your ISP
hasn't yet but is about to upgrade as the standard and the pseudo
standards are incompatible with each other.

Subject: [plug] Buying a 56K modem
Hi ya all,
I'm planning on buying a new 56K modem and just wondering if
anyone had any
advice on one suitable for Linux. I'd prefer an external modem
but if anyone
knows of a brand that works well internally I would be
interested in giving
it a go even though I have had so much trouble getting these
things to even
work under windows. (I just have so many power cords and cables
running
about it is not funny).
Thanks in advance
Michael Hunt
