[plug] installing internal modem?

I have an IBM aptiva with a win modem and an old 586 with a real modem. I
would like to
put the internal modem in the 586, and the real modem in the aptiva, so I
can read mail using Linux on the aptiva. When I put the win-modem in the
586 and switch it on I can hear the
hard drive rev up but then nothing happens (not even an error messge). Can
any one offer 
any advice on what the problem might be. The win modem is an ISA  K56 Flex
modem.
