I dont want to start any window manager wars but I dont like KDE. I love
WindowMaker (www.windowmaker.org) which will work with KDE (and Gnome) .
If I were to go down the KDE path I would certainly use Gnome instead.

in /etc/inittab you have the default run level set. You can set it to
reboot and have hours of fun or you can set it to 3 (multi user, no x)
and then use startx to, well, start X. You can set the default run level
to 5 (multi users, X) and then xdm is run. If you do that you can kill X
using "init 3" (as root) to change to run level 3.
If you have X going you can use ctrl-alt-F(1-6) for non-x terminals and
from there you can use ctrl-alt-del to reboot your machine.
