Okay, here we go: it's an old fashioned advocacy thread ;).
I'd have to agree with Gary: Debian offers exactly the same sort of
ultra-simple choice menu at the start: you can choose what sort of
profile system you want, whether it be a multimedia system, a
programming box, a network administration machine, whatever.
However, for my money, it also offers something which Redhat didn't: the
option *not* to and to specify at a very early stage exactly which
packages you want, without having to put up with someone else's choices.
It was the ability to choose which won me over Redhat; it was the
reliability and easiness of installation, updating and removal of
packages which won me over from Slackware (that and the promise of more
"standard" file and directory locations).
Anyhow, that's my two cents worth.
