I recently encountered instructions that are probably related to LD_PRELOAD 
in the Koffice compilation instructions:

  Now you have to tell the ld, that the mico libraries are in 
/usr/local/lib (if you haven't chosen a different prefix).
  You can either do (if you are root)

    echo "/usr/local/lib" >> /etc/ld.so.conf
    ldconfig -v

 or (if you are not root)

  export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH (for BASH-Users)
 or
  set LD_LIBRARY_PATH /usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH (for CSH-Users)


If you use the second possibility, you should add this line to your 
~./bashrc or ~/.cshrc.

It looks like /etc/ld.so.conf contains a list of common library 
directories, which are "cached" (?) by ldconfig.  Other than following the 
instructions, I didn't follow it up any further.

Hope this gives you some more avenues to follow up.
