What mail protocol & server? POP3?

Sure sounds like it. Check what server program is running (e.g. pop3d)
and see what the man page says about lock files.

Tar is good. It is simple, but works.
Otherwise use 'cp -a' (copy archive) to replicate a directory tree.

It depends on your MDA, but that should be enough. Whats in the file?
owner-read permission should be enough.

We need a little more info here. Which distro are you running?
try "man -k shadow". Look in /usr/doc/shadow-utils*.

Shadowed and non-shadowed passwords can co-exist. The password utils
and libc need to know about shadowing.
