http://www.math.fu-berlin.de/~guckes/vi/ should provide you with tons of
vi info. vi's interface is aimed at the keyboard and people who can type
fast - this is where vi's modal nature comes in and it is the different
modes of vi that make it a bit difficult to learn.

Once you have programmed for a few days using vi the elegance of the
interface becomes apparent (esp if you start to count the number of
keystrokes needed).

There are lots of resources comparing the advantages of various editors
on the web.
