They were using a machine with very limited IO abilities, and had to make
do. Termcaps grew, monitors got multiple lines, so they wrote vi, and kept
the old interface, so as not to confuse. It was still very efficient, and
obviously designed by the person who would be using it. Modern versions of
vi (like vim) have extensions to the interface making use of modern IO
hardware, but they have kept the sleek, efficient interface. Many of them
now have helpscreens if you can find them.
