And why would you want to run SMP on a desktop machine and not run the
pset patches on it? :)

The Linux SMP scheduler is written from a server viewpoint, so although it
tries to do it's best to stick processes to CPUs, when you have more
processes competing for CPUs than you have CPUs, (which you are when you
run X) then things get bounced around a lot, unless you help it along by
telling it what processes you want "glued" to a cpu.
