I have a SyQuest SparQ drive (1Gb) in the past and currently a
Panasonic DVD RAM drive. The SparQ looked like a great drive on
paper, with very inexpensive media, and it worked fine with Linux (I
even got it to boot from the SparQ drive). However it died in
horrible circumstances and SyQuest went bankrupt shortly afterwards.
They have been resurrected as SYQT Ltd but I still have little hope of
seeing my SparQ drive back again (it has now been almost a year since
it died).

The DVD RAM drive I have had much better experiences with so far. It
is 2.6Gb each side (5.2Gb total) and Linux support is available
(although full DVD support is still under development). It is fully
rewritable; slightly slower than the SparQ but more durable. You can
buy a DVD RAM drive for about AU$700 and double-sided media for less
than $50 from various locations on the net (eg.
http://www.provantage.com). You may have to pay customs duty though.
