Well I use cdparanoia and bladeenc to rip and encode and either x11amp or
mpg123 to play.
I am not fanatical about sound quality, but it seems to do a good job.
There are lots of options for cdparanoia depending on hardware speed and
what quality you want.  I generally use the -X option and can not hear any
defects.
