Because it must be on the 1st device, <1024 cyls on some systems.

Thats the best reason for partitons. Also /usr/local should be preserved.

For home use, no need to bother with more, but reasons relate to security,
ease of backups, reliability.

e.g. I have two root partitons - main and backup.

i.e. /usr   Install the opsys, make it RO, and no need to backup.

Of course, the big reason for multiple partitions was originally that you
couldnt fit everything on one disk.
