Try installing and using tcpdump. That will show you all the activity
that's going on, what IP addresses the machines think they have and
think they want to talk to, and so on.

While it's running, try pings to IP numbers, from both ends.

While it's running you should notice ping packets (ICMP echo requests
and replies) and ARPs. (broadcasts on the ethernet "I've got this MAC,
who has this IP address?" "I do, here's my MAC")
