[plug] Attempting to install redhat 5.2 over network

Hi David

My introduction to installing Linux (APC RH5.2) recently was in a similar
situation. You'll need to rawrite the supplementary install floppy(s).

The only problem I encountered was that under WinNT/95 all the file names
on the CD are in DOS 8.3 format, and this is what the Linux install saw over
the network.

A file in each directory called trans.tbl holds the long filenames. The
only was I found to make it work was to copy the files to a shared directory
on the hard disk on the Win machine. Judicious search & replace editing on
the trans.tbl file (replace <CR><LF> with <CR><LF>rename - as I recall -
afraid I have to admit I used MS Word to do it) will fairly easily turn it
into a DOS batch file which you can run to apply the correct filenames.

Once I'd done that the install worked fine - although I used FTP as the
Win machine had Personal Web Server (2.0) installed, and I didn't want to
spend
time sorting out the sharing permissions. Love to hear of an easier
solution as I may need to do the same thing again.

Cheers,
David
