I had fun installing & configuring Redhat on an old Alpha recently. 
 Apparently there are Alpha chips and Alpha chips, and I scored the one 
with the least support & the most difficult set-up (Jensen 150 Mhz).

To make life more interesting, the machine came with a graphics card with 
no X driver (Compaq QVision card).  There were also problems with the clock 
as the Jensen used non-standard interrupts or addresses or something.  The 
boot loader was also non-standard and milo (the alpha lilo) didn't work.

However, when it was set up the machine ran KDE quite nicely on 
X-terminals.  Speed comparisons showed that it was roughly equivalent to a 
150 Mhz MIPS DECstation running Ultrix.  I am not sure if the programs 
running on the Alpha were taking much advantage of the 64 bit processor 
though.  Unfortunately I didn't note the "BogoMIPS" number during boot up.
