You shouldn't need to compile anything.

Under X in the control panel is network configuration.  Start the network
configurator buy clicking once on it.  Select the "Interfaces" tab and add a
PPP interface if ppp0 is not already there.  Highlight the line that has the
ppp0.  This will open another window to actually configure the PPP connection
and chat scripts.  The first window is hardware...Unless it has something
unusual in it, it can just stay as it is.

The next tab accross is communications.  This sets up the options for chat. 
These need to be customerised for you ISP
Modem init string as required.  AT&F should be ok with most modems nowdays.
Modem dial command ATDT
Phone Number 91234567

EXPECT	SEND
login:		tony
password:	yourpassword
menuoption	option to start ppp

You only need the last part of the prompt.  For login I have ogin:   Remember
it is case sensivitive. 

The next tab is networking...Make sure you have default route checked.  The
rest of the options can be left blank at this stage.

The last option is for pap.  Put your user name and password in here.  You are
probabley better off not using PAP.

Click on done then save.

With ppp0 highlighted click on activate.  The modem will start to dial and if
the communications options are correct it will bring up the PPP link.

You can do all this with vi by editing the files
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 and
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0

To start it from a shell enter
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup ifcfg-ppp0
