[plug] ppp connection

This sounds like a user validation problem...In /etc/ppp/options add a
couple of lines 
kdebug 4
debug 
lock
modem
asyncmap 0

In a separate consol window do
tail -f /var/log/messages

In this window you should see pppd and a reason why it failed.

Can you hear dial tone and the modem actually dialing.. Change the init sting
to AT&FM1&C1&D2


Post the log if you still can get it going.
