Maybe you can add a "virtual host" of "contact.net.au:80"
It is almost definitely the virtual hosting part of the software that is
the culprit since it seems to think "contact.net.au:80" is a different
server from "contact.net.au"

Unlikely. I would say it violates section 14.23 of the HTTP/1.1
specification.

http://live.networx.net.au/~zombie/wget-HACKED for a glibc-linked version.
If you use libc5 let me know and I'll try to build you another one. :)

Let's say we call it quitts. ;)
