[plug] Why are my widgets furry?

Hi,

We are currently running Linux 2.0.36 from a Debian distro on
a Toshiba Portege 3010CT (a portable PC) ... but we are very unhappy
with the look of for example the scroll bars in xterms. They look
`fuzzy', quite unlike the look on our old portable PC.
Has anyone experienced this sort of problem? ... have any idea on
what I'm talking about? ... or better still know how to fix it?
I tried installing the neXTaw widgets (from Debian's nextawg and
aw-wrappers package) ... but though they look better, they are still
fuzzy. Yes ... we are operating at 16bpp, so we should have enough
colours.
Also, possibly related ... the xapm display is quite different to
what we are used to: the border around the battery-time left is again
fuzzy (and annoyingly smaller ... so that only one minutes digit is
visible - making the whole display larger doesn't fix it) and the
bar displaying graphically the state of battery-charge is grey ...
not green as its supposed to be. Why? Why? Why?
Can anyone suggest a better apm displayer that xapm? ... we looked
at wmapm which is sort of nice but its % display comes up wrongly
(stating 90% when in fact the charge is 100%) and it doesn't
understand the X geometry protocols.

  Regards and TIA,
  Greg Gamble <gregg at maths.uwa.edu.au>
